The Air Jordan 13 didn't start on a sketchpad — it started with an actual black cat. During a 1996 Bulls-Knicks game at Madison Square Garden, a black cat wandered onto the court right in front of the Knicks bench. Chicago went on to blow the Knicks out that night, and the moment fed straight into Michael Jordan's reputation as a predator who struck when you least expected it.
Tinker Hatfield ran with it. The AJ13, released in 1997, is a shoe built like a panther:

Hatfield came to Nike by way of architecture school, and it shows. He never designed a shoe to just look good in a case — he designed it to tell a story on Jordan's feet, live, in real games. The Air Force 1 lineage, the visible Air of the Air Max 1, the wings-and-flight motifs across the Jordan line — Hatfield's whole body of work treats the sneaker as narrative first, product second.
The 13 is one of his most literal translations: an athlete's nickname, an animal's anatomy, and a basketball shoe, fused into one silhouette.
